Joy Mulled Spice Mead

“Joy is full-bodied, with a rich full palette of warm mulled spice flavor. It has a full, and weighted finish that lingers on the tongue. It can be served chilled, at room temperature or warmed like a mulled cider.”—Jonathan Stewart, New York Sommelier

Cocktail

No Bull Hot Toddy

¾ Cup of water, brought to simmer

3oz Bull and Bee Joy Mulled Spice Mead

1oz Whiskey

2 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice, to taste

Garnish with a lemon round and cinnamon stick

Joy Mulled Manhattans (makes two cocktails):

  • 4 ounces Joy Mulled Spice Mead
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce mulled simple syrup (see below) or simple syrup
  • several drops orange bitters
  • several drops regular old fashioned bitters *
  • 2 strips of orange zest

 Directions:

  1. Chill your cocktail glasses.
  2. Mix Joy Mulled Spice Mead, vermouth and mulled simple syrup (or regular simple syrup) over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously until frosty. Strain into glasses.
  3. Sprinkle a dash of orange bitters and a dash of old fashioned bitters onto each cocktail. Twist zest over drink and drop in. You can also drop in the star anise from the mulling to give a nice aromatic. Not needed, but it looks and smells good.

    Mulled Simple Syrup

    • 1 cup water
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 3 tablespoons whole mulling spices (cinnamon, allspice, cloves)
    • 1-2 star anise
    • several strips orange zest
    1. Add all ingredients to small saucepan and bring to gentle simmer. Stir until all the sugar has dissolved and let simmer for 5-10 minutes or until sufficiently steeped. Turn off heat and let cool to room temp with spices. Decant into glass bottle (or plastic squeeze bottle as I do) straining out the spices. It is ready to use or keep in fridge.

    Spiked Mulled Apple Cider:

    • ½ gallon apple cider
    • 1 cup Joy
    • 4 orange slices optional, cut into wedges
    • 3-4 slices apple slices optional
    • 8 oz bourbon I prefer 8 oz, but up to 12 oz can be added for a stronger cocktail
    • 8 cinnamon sticks optional, as garnish
    • 8 whole star anise optional, as garnish

     Directions:

    1. Add the apple cider, mulling spices, 2 orange slices, and 3-4 apple slices to a large soup pot. Then, turn on the heat, stir, and cook over low heat for 20-30 minutes until the cider is infused with flavor.
    2. Remove the pot of cider from the heat and pour 8 oz strained mulled cider into a large mug. Add 1 oz bourbon to each mug. You can also add all the bourbon directly to the pot of mulled cider before serving and stir it in. Before serving, garnish with optional orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or star anise and stir. Enjoy!

    GENESIS DRY MEAD

“Genesis is a complex and versatile example of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage. Enjoy chilled as a clean white wine style beverage. Room temperature or warmed for more full, complex layered flavors. Or used as a base for low ABV cocktails such as Martinis and Manhattans. It’s only limit is your imagination.”—Jonathan Stewart, New York Sommelier

    MIDAS SWEET MEAD

“Midas is rich and full-bodied, a more luxurious counterpart to Genesis. This sibling is made with the same clover and wildflower local honey and provides a rich honeyed and snappy finish.”—Jonathan Stewart, New York Sommelier

    HADES (HELLA HOT) PEPPER MEAD

“Hades is a unique and exhilarating treat for the adventurous. The combination of the heat from the pepper blend is balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the honey, creating a dynamic flavor that will excite your taste buds. The taste is not for the faint-hearted, and is a must try.”—Jonathan Stewart, New York Sommelier
